A highlight is Canaletto’s Capriccio of Piazza San Marco and the Redentore. Canaletto (1697-1768) is the most renowned Venetian view painter. This painting is rare because it is a capriccio, combining real architectural elements with imaginative inventions. While living in Britain, Canaletto positioned the church of the Redentore unrealistically behind St. Mark’s.
He likely included it because Palladio’s architecture was greatly admired by the British.
Another featured work is Portrait of a boy with dogs by Bartolomeo Passarotti. Passarotti (1529-1592) was a leading figure of 16th-century Italian painting. Known for his mannerist style, he also excelled in naturalistic portraiture. The painting shows a proud young boy, probably from a Bolognese aristocratic family.
