Pair of Louis XVI Period Candelabra
Attributed to the Bronzier FRANCOIS REMOND
Probably made under the direction of Dominique Daguerre
Circa 1780
Daguerre supplied two pairs of this model in the 1790s to the Prince of Wales (later George IV) for his London residence Carlton House (Royal Collection 2695). They were originally placed in the south anteroom,
where they can be seen in Charles Wild's watercolour of the piece produced for the royal residences by the engraver of Pyne in 1819 (Carlton House: The Past Glores of George IV's Palace, London 1991, No. 190, pp.211-12). They were then recorded in the Throne Room of St James's Palace in 1827 and eventually finally transferred to Buckingham Palace, where they have been in the White Room since 1915 (illustrated in J. Harris et al, Buckingham Palace and Its Treasures, New York 1968, p.58-59). One pair is on the mantelpiece adjacent
the famous secret door to the private flats, and the other placed on the mantelpiece in front of which HM Queen Elizabeth II recently gave her annual Christmas address in 2018
