The ballet was set to music by English composer Constant Lambert, choreographed by Nijinsky, and created by the Ballets Russes directed by Serge Diaghilev with George Balanchine in 1926, in Monte Carlo. Diaghilev persuaded the Russian ballerina Tamara Karsavina to embody the role of Juliet and chooses Serge Lifar as Romeo. Max Ernst was involved in the design of all the decorations while Mirò takes care of the costumes.
