Galerie Taménaga celebrates Jean-Pierre Cassigneul

Jean-Pierre Cassigneul, Carnets Intimes, 22 May - 21 June 2025
On the occasion of Jean-Pierre Cassigneul’s 90th birthday, Galerie Taménaga unveils an exceptional exhibition celebrating the artist, whose singular universe has endured through the decades with unwavering sensitivity and grace. Entitled Carnets Intimes, the exhibition invites visitors on a contemplative journey through the painter’s memories, tracing over sixty years of a deeply personal exploration of beauty, poised delicately between reality and imagination. Bringing together more than forty paintings — from the 1960s to the present day — the exhibition reveals a body of work shaped by the pursuit of a serene, almost suspended world. Enclosed gardens, opulent bouquets, sun-drenched houses, tranquil lakesides and languid summer shores compose an intimate, near-secret geography that Cassigneul traverses tirelessly. His landscapes, often untouched by the clamour of the world, evoke sanctuaries for the soul. At the very heart of this oeuvre are women. The women of Cassigneul imbued with quiet grace and timeless elegance. Through their recurring presence, they lend his work its most poignant depth. Tall figures crowned with hats, wrapped in silks of muted sheen, they appear to emerge from another era, from a realm gently out of reach. Their thoughts drift afar, across inner waters that painting can only ever graze. Through this exhibition, Jean-Pierre Cassigneul is revealed in all his facets: painter of beauty, poet of colour, chronicler of a steadfast dream. With undiminished delicacy, he continues his silent dialogue with the world. A world he gently whispers to us through each canvas, far from the noise, where beauty remains, both fragile and sovereign.

ABOUT

Founded in Tokyo in 1969 by Kiyoshi Taménaga, Galerie Taménaga successively opened two additional spaces in Osaka and Paris in 1971, then in Kyoto in 2021. Galerie Taménaga is the first Japanese art gallery specialising in the great Western masters. As such, its collection includes many masterpieces by impressionist and modern masters such as Bonnard, Chagall, Derain, Dufy, Picasso, Redon, Renoir, Utrillo, van Dongen, etc. The prosperity of the gallery is intrinsically linked to a history of family and transmission. This is how Tsugu Taménaga joined the gallery in 1990. Like his father, he inherited a great sensitivity and curiosity, and decided to devote himself more broadly to the discovery and support of contemporary artists, following the example of the artists recognised today: Chen Jiang-Hong, Takehiko Sugawara, Kyosuke Tchinaï, Tamihito Yoshikawa, but also the American Tom Christopher, or the Spanish Lorenzo Fernandez. With an active presence at prestigious international art fairs, Galerie Taménaga regularly exhibits the great masters of modern art in its four spaces and actively contributes to the discovery of new Japanese talents. Today, it is one of the major defenders of the current Asian art scene.
