Gilbert & George celebrate becoming BRAFA's Guest of Honour in 2019...

The international BRAFA Art Fair is proud to welcome Gilbert & George as Guest of Honour of its 2019 edition (Tour & Taxis, Brussels, 26 January - 3 February).

In the half century that they have lived and created art together as Living Sculptures, embarked on a visionary journey through the modern world, always together and always alone, Gilbert & George have created fiercely singular Anti-Art that is poetic, primal and emotionally driven.

Having started out as performance artists, they became famous for their large-scale photo pieces. These are often in very bright colours with superimposed black gridlines evoking the windows of yesteryear. The images are contemporary and immediately recognisable, with most placing portraits of both artists in the picture.

Although their art draws inspiration from (their) daily life, the vision they offer is in turns metaphysical, mystical, or polemical, but always with a touch of humour and conveying a message.

At BRAFA 2019, they will present five recent large-scale works that will be placed at various spots throughout the fair. Their quirky vision of the world is sure to be a hit in the land of surrealism!

The five pictures that will be presented have all been selected by Gilbert & George. There are from big scaled recent series: the ‘Jack Freak Pictures’ (2008), the ‘London Pictures’ (2010), the ‘Scapegoating Pictures’ (2013) and the ‘Beard Pictures’ (2016).

ROCAD.be exhibits at BRAFA 2019 to celebrate its 100th anniversary

ROCAD.be has been invited to exhibit at BRAFA 2019 to celebrate its centennial anniversary. During this 64th edition of BRAFA Art Fair, ROCAD.be exhibits more than forty iconic masterpieces in a specially designed space. All of these works of art have been sold by members of the Belgian professional association to collectors and museums. ROCAD.be also took this opportunity to publish a magnificent book shedding light on more than 100 art pieces and their stories, coming from its members.

ROCAD.be will richly celebrate its 100th jubilee during BRAFA. The professional association is taking this opportunity to exhibit about forty exceptional art works in a 100 square meter space: old masters and modern paintings, decorative arts, tribal arts, porcelain, silverwork, archaeology and antique furniture. All of these works of art have been sold by ROCAD.be members to collectors and museums, and only represent a small part of the association’s activities. None of the works are for sale, as they come from private collections. The exhibited pieces are a reflection of the quality and the diversity of its members, and will each try to tell a very personal story to the public.

Some highlights included are:
- Two works by Belgian surrealist painter René Magritte (1898-1967)
- An exceptional Chinese Bodhissatva from the 6th century AD
- A very rare earthenware Djenné statue from Mali
- A fine service « aux oiseaux de Buffon » from the Tournai Manufacture, Belgium, 18th century
- A pair of firedogs by Pierre Gouthière, 18th century, of which only one other example is known in the Palace of Versailles
- A portrait by Belgian painter Henri Evenepoel (1872-1899)

A lecture will be organised on Sunday January 27th at 2PM – a part of the BRAFA Art Talks - to familiarise the public with ROCAD’s activities.
