Aller-Retour. Dutch artists in Paris 1789-1914

Mayken Jonkman, LLM, MA will take you on a journey to the nineteenth century in Paris. The city was home to a great number of art academies, exhibition venues and experienced art dealers. In a word, it was a paradise for artists looking for success. They travelled to Paris from all corners of the world, hoping to achieve a name for themselves and the immortality of their art. Yet this was no easy feat: however talented an artist may have been, more was required to make it big in Paris. Mayken Jonkman will provide an insight into the strategies of Dutch artists on their eventful path to Parisian success.

Dr. Mayken Jonkman is a Senior Curator of Nineteenth-Century Art at the RKD – the Netherlands Institute for Art History. She studied art history at the University of Amsterdam, specialising in nineteenth-century Dutch art in an international context. She also studied law at the University of Utrecht, writing her masters’ thesis on the use of copyright laws and museum practices. She has published works on wide-ranging subjects such as nineteenth-century collectors, art dealers, the image of the artist and studio practices. She is currently writing her PhD on Dutch artists who travelled to Paris in the nineteenth century, which she aims to finalise in the spring of 2023. Together with Rachel Esner (University of Amsterdam), Jenny Reynaerts (Rijksmuseum) and Beatrice von Bormann (Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam), Mayken is one of the initiators of the project entitled The Other Half. Women in the Dutch art world 1780-1980.

Theodoor Rombouts. A virtuoso of Flemish Caravaggism

On the occasion of its 225th anniversary, the Fine Arts Museum in Ghent will be organising the very first monographic exhibition devoted to the Flemish Caravaggist painter Theodoor Rombouts (1597-1637). Rombouts was an established figure in the Antwerp artistic community. But although his painting was appreciated during his short life, his artistic heritage was soon forgotten after his death. Curator Dr Frederica Van Dam will shed new light on Rombouts’ artistic personality and discuss the specificities of his work.

The talk will analyse the reasons for the birth of Art Nouveau, an unprecedented artistic and architectural form of expression in Brussels around 1893: its identity, its contradictions and how it differed from the Arts and Crafts movement in Britain. The anniversaries and the names of the great architectural styles often conceal nuances, secrets and explanations that call into question what Art Nouveau really was, its manifestations and its protagonists.

The King Baudouin Foundation’s Art Nouveau collection

Art Nouveau, which reached its peak around 1900, was the first truly Belgian style. It is associated with architecture and the decorative arts. Its main representatives include Victor Horta, Paul Hankar, Henry van de Velde and Philippe Wolfers. In over 20 years, the King Baudouin Foundation has built up an important collection of Belgian Art Nouveau masterpieces. Each artwork has a fascinating history that will be explained in the historical context.

Flanders possesses a movable cultural heritage of exceptional importance. With the Masterpiece Decree, the Flemish government is seeking to protect and conserve this heritage. Top items can be owned by both public institutions and private collectors. With a view to shedding light on the operation of the ‘Topstukkenraad’ and to eliminate potential misunderstandings surrounding the protection of our cultural heritage, the council responsible for the classification of exceptional heritage assets has decided to outline its functioning in a short presentation.

Harper's Bazaar magazine celebrates the best in art, fashion and leadership. It has its own business club where women creators and entrepreneurs can network and be inspired to dream big. At BRAFA, Editor-in-chief Miluska van 't Lam will meet with two women entrepreneurs who have earned their stripes in the international art world: Carmen Willems, Director General of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp (KMSKA), which has just reopened its doors, and Christiane Struyven, art historian and lawyer. The topic under discussion will be how to connect art and entrepreneurship in order to develop a project, a brand or a company.

Diamonds: time for clarity

Since the beginning of time, diamonds have been perceived as the most valuable commodity. Their beauty and rarity ensure that they are desired worldwide. To protect consumers, rules of the game have been implemented to provide clarity regarding their purchase. Not only in terms of the value of the product but also in terms of transparency concerning its origin. The phenomenon of lab-grown diamonds is still in its infancy, so there is still a need for the industry to provide guidelines for transparency. In this talk, Eric Hemeleers, together with Ellen Joncheere and Cédric van den Abeele, will identify all the risks and facets of the diamond business.

What benefits can be expected? What are the risks? Subjects under discussion will include certification issues, market dynamics and intellectual property aspects. There will be a question and answer period on this new subject which has inspired much curiosity.

François Toussaint is the co-founder and CEO of ARTTS, a start-up working with artists, galleries, private collections and museums to create new opportunities for the art world leveraging web3 technologies such as NFTs. For many years, François was a strategic communications and business consultant. Three years ago, he co-founded ‘3 roots studio' in Barcelona, an audio-visual studio and communications consulting company. Trained in Law, he has been advising companies across different industries.
Sari Depreeuw is an IP lawyer and partner in Crowell & Moring’s Brussels office. She focuses on copyright and digital law, with more than 15 years of experience advising and representing a wide range of Belgian, European, and international clients on copyright, neighbouring rights, software and database rights, and on all issues relating to the access to, acquisition and use of digital assets. She is a part-time professor at the UCLouvain/Université Saint-Louis Bruxelles, where she teaches intellectual property and media law.
Elie Auvray is a software entrepreneur with more than 20 years of experience in the US and Europe. Elie is currently the co-founder of logion, the blockchain infrastructure for safe digital ownership. Logion is the only public blockchain where token-related data and files are genuinely transformed into certified evidence by a decentralised network of Legal Officers. As a result, all projects built with the logion infrastructure increase their digital asset value over the long term.
