Francis Maere Fine Arts - Highlights

The Galerie Francis Maere has the pleasure to present at BRAFA 2024 an exceptional collection of Belgian and European paintings, sculptures and works on paper from the beginning of the 20th century. Most of the works are 'fresh on the market', they have not been on the market for at least 30 years. All have impeccable provenance and authenticity documents. On the surrealist side, two important paintings by Paul Delvaux (1897-1994) put the guest of honour 'in the spotlight' or a very interesting work by the Franco-Russian painter Léopold Survage (1879-1968), Raccomodeuses de filets dated 1929... On the Belgian side, a very fine work by Léon Spilliaert (1891-1946), The Ostend lighthouse - seen from the pier at night ca. 1907 or a superb painting by Anto Carte (1886-1954), The Acrobat, painted in the 1920s. Will also be on show some large sculptures by the Franco-Belgian artist Eugène Dodeigne (1923-2015) from the former Sueess collection in Basel, and two large bronzes by the Belgian sculptor Jean-Michel Folon (1934-2005). A small selection of works by Belgian masters such as Rik Wouters, Valerius De Saedeleer, Emile Claus, Théo Van Rysselberghe, Constant Permeke and Pol Bury. On the modern and contemporay side, some great works by Sam Francis, Christian Dotremont, Pierre Clerk, Hanneke Beaumont and Johan De Wit...

A BRAFA Art Fair 2024 Highlight presented by Francis Maere

Enter the world of art and culture with Francis Maere, Vice Chairman of Modern & Contemporary Art and a specialist in Belgian and European contemporary art from the early 20th century, as he unveils one of his favourite BRAFA 2024 highlights, on display at Brussels Expo from 28 January to 4 February.

Discover the extraordinary Dan tribe ivory mask from the late 19th century, a rare piece that bridges African and contemporary art. Claes Gallery's exhibit boasts spatially projected volumes and frontal ridges that create a powerful architectural form; a true rarity of its kind. These masks were used for conflict resolution and war management and in this case have a traceable provenance, highlighting an important aspect of all the pieces at the BRAFA Art Fair.

Featured: Dan Mask. Ivory Coast, late 19th century. Wood, H 23 cm. Provenance: Dr. Alexander Rafaeli collection (1910-1996).
