Female Figure
Dan, Liberia
Wood, vegetable fibre, cloth, cowries
H 50 cm
Provenance: Marina e Vittorio Mangiò, Monza; private collection, UK
This very rare Female Dan Figure was carved by Zlan a great master and teacher among Dan sculptors. This artist was famous in the first quarter of the 20th cent. as author of the most refined and sublime Dan Female figures. Collected in the early ’60 by Vittorio Mangiò, an italian pioneer among the Collector of African Art, the present figure, possibly the portrait of a chief’s wife, well represent the Dan ideal of feminine beauty.
