GALLERY SOFIE VAN DE VALDE PRESENTS: WALTER VAN BEIRENDONCK Draw The World Awake

Gallery Sofie Van de Velde is delighted to take part in the very first edition of Antwerp Fashion Festival
(4 - 7 June), a natural collaboration that reflects the long-standing connection between the gallery and the world of fashion. Believing art and fashion to be intrinsically intertwined, the gallery has proudly worked with figures from both fields, from representing artist and fashion designer Dirk Van Saene to presenting an exhibition of Marina Yee’s archive earlier this year.

In this context, Gallery Sofie Van de Velde presents Draw The World Awake, an exhibition by Walter Van Beirendonck bringing together 155 original design drawings.

These works occupy a crucial place within Van Beirendonck’s practice. Created at the very beginning of the design process, after periods of research and collage making, the drawings become the moment in which an entire world takes shape. Not only the clothing is determined here, but also the styling, make up, hair and overall attitude of the collection.

The exhibition reveals the radical freedom and playfulness that runs throughout Van Beirendonck’s work. His drawings move restlessly across the page, filled to the edges with colour, symbols, text and figures, refusing restraint as much as his fashion does.
