CoBrA back in Brussels
A mix of strange masks, multi-coloured figures and fantastical animals – this painting reflects the world of Corneille’s imagination, where spontaneity and instinct guide his every brush stroke. With its abundance of drawings supported by lively colours with stark contrasts, abstract as well as figurative shapes in a joyous commingling, Petite musique du printemps is a surprising example of the poetic style of the CoBrA movement.
The CoBrA group was founded in 1948, under the impetus of Christian Dotremont and Joseph Noiret (Brussels), Asger Jorn (Copenhagen), Karel Appel, Constant Anton Nieuwenhuis, known as Constant, and Cornelis van Beverloo, known as Corneille (Amsterdam). Associated with the experimental movement of revolutionary surrealism, they collectively broke with the existing formalism and artistic currents in order to move towards a form of art where action and movement predominate.
