Pierre Coumans-Highlight Otto Schubert

Folio (506 x 360 mm), publisher’s boards. First edition hand-printed and illustrated with 24 original colour woodblocks by the expressionist painter Otto Schubert (1892-1970), member of the « second generation » of the German expressionists and of the « Dresdner Sezession » (Gruppe 1919) which brought together painters like Otto Dix, Conrad Felixmüller, Will Heckrott, Laser Segall, Constantin von Mitschke-Collande, Peter August Böckstiegel, and the architect Hugo Zehder. This extraordinary expressionist bestiary, one of the most beautiful and spectacular children's books of the early twentieth century, was designed by the artist for Nele and Tyll, the children of the architect Henry van de Velde (1863-1957) whom he had met through Julius Meier-Graefe (1867-1935), the famous German gallery owner, writer, publisher, critic, and art historian. The latter financed the publication. This is the only colour woodcut suite created by the artist.
