Axel Vervoordt Gallery - Jef Verheyen 1955-1962 Antwerp-Düsseldorf-Milan > 01.05.2021

This presentation presents a wide selection of early works by Jef Verheyen and his international friends. The late 1950's and early 1960's marks an exciting period for the avant-garde art scene in Europe. Cities like Antwerp, Düsseldorf, Milan were meeting places for artists such as Jef Verheyen, Yves Klein, Günther Uecker, Lucio Fontana, and Piero Manzoni who aimed to explore artistic boundaries, while their friendships intensified.

Mouvements like Nouveau Réalisme and ZERO flourished and several iconic group exhibitions were organised, which deepened their connnections. Verheyen played an important role in this interconnectedness - he travelled regularly and maintained written correspondence with his artist friends. These on-going conversations were crucial in developping links to their view on art, life, and philosophy. Altough he was much older, Fontana referred to Verheyen as 'il mio padre'. These artists brought painting back to its essence and opened the road to infinity with concepts like light being the essential mechanism, colour being the pictorial dynamic and transcendental element.
