Galerie Cazeau – Fauna and Flora - 02.10 > 13.11.2020

05/10/2020

Diego Giacometti L'Autruche, c. 1977 Bronze and ostrich egg 50.5 x 15 X 30 cm, approx. (19 3/4 x 6 x 11 3/4 in.) Stamped and with monogram, "Diego DG"

From Picasso to André Masson, modern masters of the 20th century have found in Fauna and Flora much inspiration. This exhibition pays tribute to the nature behind these works and aims to bring together the many different techniques used to represent it.

While on his exile to America, Masson confessed to have been extremely influenced by the many plants he discovered throughout his journey through the Caribbean. This nature is discernible in Bestiaire, a work from the artist's American period.

For Picasso, animals were always a form of inspiration. One of the few artists to have illustrated Georges Buffon's L'Histoire Naturelle, by his own curiosity and at the request of Ambroise Vollard, Picasso thrived in capturing the essence of the animal itself and manifesting it through his art. There was therefore no doubt that ceramic would provide an ideal medium for him to continue his experimentation with the bestiaire in the 50s, from which many sculpted animals were born.
