Necklace

Necklace
Gold and semi-precious stones
Rope-like loop-in-loop-chain, finials shaped into crouching animals with turquoise inlays and a rectangular centrepiece set with a large oval amethyst
The chain and central setting match the jewellery of the late Hellenistic and early Imperial Roman periods but the animals suggest a late Sarmatian origin
This confederacy of Iranian people closely related to the western Scythians favoured gold-work marked by a colourful interpretation of the famous 'Animal Style’
