Emile Claus (St Eloois-Vijve 1849-1924 Astene)
Oil on canvas
90 x 120 cm
Signed lower left: Em. Claus
Dated and monogrammed on reverse: Julij J.A. / E.C.
The painter is well known for his panoramic landscapes. A close observer of detail, as is shown in this work, he also often uses sunlight to illuminate the composition from behind. The painting is wonderfully balanced and was created in the garden of his Villa Zonneschijn in Astene. The meandering Lys can be seen in the view.
